Find and install an app safely
Apps add new things your iPhone can do, like Facebook, Zoom, or a game you enjoy. Here's how to get the real app and avoid charges you didn't expect.
Get an app from the App Store
- Open the App Store. It's the blue icon with a white letter A.
- Tap Search, then type the app's name.
- Tap the app's name or icon to see its details page.
- Check the name of the company that made it (the developer). It should match the company you expect.
- Tap Get if it's free. If it shows a price instead, tapping it buys the app.
- Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. The app appears on your iPhone when it's done downloading.
Is this the real app?
- Look-alike names. Copycat apps may use a similar name or icon. Check the developer name and the ratings.
- Read a few reviews. Look for complaints about surprise charges or too many ads.
- Be careful with apps a stranger told you to get. If a caller or message says to install an app so they can "help" or "fix" your iPhone, it's a scam.
Avoid surprise charges
- A free app may still sell things inside it. Look for "In-App Purchases" on its page.
- Free trials often turn into paid subscriptions. Write down when the trial ends.
- To see or cancel subscriptions: open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. Tap one, then tap Cancel Subscription.
- Charged for something by mistake? Apple has a page for asking for a refund. It's linked at the bottom of this guide.
Good to know
- Keep your apps up to date, along with your iPhone. See Update your iPhone.
- Don't want an app anymore? Touch and hold its icon, then look for Remove App.
